Monroe Community Credit Union began renovations at its Winchester branch, 14 Winchester St. in Monroe. The project was announced in March.
At Monroe County Business Alliance’s May 19 Coffee Club gathering, Kristine Brenner, CEO of the credit union, said renovation began Monday, May 18 and could be completed by Thanksgiving. Brenner said the project is a more than a $2 million investment.
The project will take place in phases, beginning with enhancements to the drive-thru with the addition of Interactive Teller Machine technology, according to a May 21 news release from MCCU.
Renovation of the main building is expected to begin later this summer.
During construction, MCCU “plans to minimize disruption to members and the surrounding community,” according to the news release.
“The Winchester branch has served the Monroe community for more than 60 years and holds deep historical significance for both the credit union and the neighborhood it anchors. The planned renovations will preserve the branch’s long-standing community presence while modernizing the space to better serve current and future members,” the news release said.
“This project reflects our continued commitment to reinvesting in the community that has supported us for generations,” Brenner said. “We are excited to officially begin construction and take the first steps toward creating an enhanced experience for our members.”
James S. Jacobs Architects of Monroe drew the project’s plans. MCCU also is working with the City of Monroe.
“By working alongside local leaders and community partners, we’re bringing a shared vision to life,” Brenner said. “We firmly believe in the power of ‘Being Local.’ which is why we proudly selected Mid-American Group (of Newport) as general contractor and will be supporting many other local contractors and businesses throughout this renovation project.”
According to Monroe News archives, MCCU was organized in December 1953 to serve employees of Monroe’s former Consolidated Paper Company. In the 1970s, the credit union moved to 14 Winchester St.
In 1982, its membership was expanded to include anyone who lives or works in Monroe County. The Winchester branch was the credit union’s headquarters until 1997, when it built its current main office at 715 N. Telegraph Road in Monroe.
Today, MCCU, according to the news release, has $390 million in assets, six banking locations and 32,000 members throughout Michigan and the Ohio counties of Lucas, Wood and Fulton.
