Two brush fires in the Maytown area in southern Volusia County, which grew to over 250 acres each on June 26, are now 100% contained, according to Volusia County government spokesman Clayton Jackson.
The Florida Forest Service was at the scene early June 27 to monitor the situation and take care of any hot spots.
No injuries were reported, and no homes or other structures were damaged or threatened during the fires, according to Jackson.
“Volusia County appreciates the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies and will provide additional updates if conditions warrant,” according to Jackson.
Drivers could still see and smell smoke.
“Motorists are urged to exercise caution when traveling through the area,” according to the county. “People who are sensitive to smoke are encouraged to remain indoors with doors and windows closed while conditions persist.”
Volusia Sheriff’s Office drops water on the fire
Several other agencies helped in the response, including Volusia County Fire Rescue, the Port Orange Fire Department, the Deltona Fire Department and the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office dropped dozens of buckets of water on the area via a helicopter, part of its Air One fleet, to help extinguish the flames, according to a Facebook post from the agency. The helicopter focused on the area of Gobblers Lodge Road and Osteen Maytown Road.
