I live in Sarasota. Where are the answers on property taxes? | Letter

Of late, there has been an awful lot of press and discussion regarding potential Florida property tax changes.

Of course, who would not enjoy such relief?

There is no doubt that our municipalities and public sector are bloated, inefficient and ineffective.

However, an income source to provide services that we desire and have come to expect is required.

Property taxes have always been a primary source.

Absent that, what will be the origin of funding?

Our governor has spoken of a state trust fund but no one has advised as to how that will be funded.

It has been indicated that these tax “adjustments” will pertain only to homesteaded properties.

Thus, will second homeowners, investors and mom-and-pop landlords bear an increased burden on these non-homesteaded properties?

Will such action drive up rents?

Will it make second-home ownership more expensive and thus less attractive – perhaps driving down real estate values?

Will there be a regressive sales tax increase to offset that income loss, thereby imposing an across-the-board levy on those that can least afford it?

The whole pitch sounds very inviting but like any proposal, the devil is in the details.

We need a lot more information in order to make a sound decision.
