How soon will Ted Hurst earning a meaningful target share?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers enter 2026 with one of the deepest wide receiver rooms in the NFC, which makes it easy to assume a rookie like Ted Hurst will face an uphill battle to see the field early, but his path to contributing might not be as crowded as it seems.

Hurst brings a skill set that’s a little different from the rest of the room. While Tampa Bay’s top receivers win with experienced route running, speed, and established chemistry, Hurst’s calling card is his body control, size, and ability to adjust to the football.

He consistently tracks the ball well in the air and makes difficult catches look routine, especially in contested situations.

The Bucs have had stretches in which finishing through contact and winning in tight windows have been issues, particularly on third downs and in the red zone. Hurst’s ability to adjust mid-route and high-point the football gives quarterbacks a reliable option when plays break down or when coverage is tight. There’s also a situational role to consider. Even in a crowded room, Hurst’s skill set fits as a possession-style target who can move the chains and provide a steady presence underneath or along the boundary, something the team would have lacked with Mike Evans departing for San Fran.

Of course, like most rookies, his fastest path to game day reps will likely come on special teams. If Hurst can prove himself as a willing and effective contributor in coverage units, it significantly boosts his chances of being active on Sundays while he works his way into the offensive rotation.

He may not be walking in as a starter, but Ted Hurst doesn’t need to be. In a room full of talent, finding a niche is what matters.
