New AI gun detection tool leads to arrest at FSU parking garage

A new law enforcement tool that uses AI to identify firearms led to the arrest of a teen after he was caught brandishing a gun at an Florida State University campus parking garage, police said.

Tyler Farmer, 19, was charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds, improper carrying of concealed firearm, improper display of firearm and grand theft of firearm. He was being held at the Leon County Detention Facility as of May 5.

Florida State University police responded to the St. Augustine Parking Garage on May 2 in reference to a “ZeroEyes camera notification,” according to court records.

ZeroEyes, according to their website, was “founded in 2018 by a team of Navy SEALS and elite technologists following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school active shooter incident, ZeroEyes was created to protect people from having to face similar circumstances.”

The system works by integrating with existing security technology to analyze live feeds and detect any firearms. Footage is then verified by employees at ZeroEyes headquarters, who in turn alert law enforcement.

Farmer, who isn’t an FSU student, allegedly was seen pointing a gun at others and getting into a white Dodge Challenger. Officers arrived on scene and found someone sitting inside the vehicle and two others standing beside it. All were detained. They later discovered the person brandishing the gun was Farmer, based on his Florida license.

After a check of the firearm’s serial number, it turned out the gun was stolen out of Miller County, Georgia. Law enforcement there confirmed the gun was stolen.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story inaccurately referred to the arrested teen as an FSU student. He was not a student, according to FSU.
