Talk about a dog having its day: This canine champ not only had his moment in the spotlight but sat up and howled for an appreciative crowd, too.
“His” day was a blast for Macro, a 15-month-old standard dachshund who won first place for dog tricks at the fourth annual Magic & Dog Show at the Magic Dove in Cocoa Village. A music lover (Metallica is a favorite), Macro “sings along” with a variety of music, “performing” to “Happy Birthday” at the July 19 show.

The show is a big draw — this year’s event was sold out — for lovers of legerdemain and animals with tricks that deserve treats. This year, the show raised funds for nonprofit Low Rider Dachshund Rescue.
“I’m always game to photograph events that involve dogs,” said Shortt, who’s snagged photos of critters from towering elephants to tiny opossums and tamarins.
“Macro had been amusing the crowd for barking like a heckler at certain moments during the various performances. He then was thrilled when he took the stage. But when he took first place, it’s like he knew he had truly had his day. He was barking and howling as he accepted his award along with his ‘mom.'”
