Florida State football opens a pivotal 2026 season under mounting pressure, and an early ACC showdown with SMU on Labor Day could quickly reveal whether the Seminoles are poised for a rebound or another frustrating fall.
The Sept. 7 primetime matchup at Doak Campbell Stadium (7:30 p.m.) comes just one week after FSU’s season opener against New Mexico State and presents an immediate test for coach Mike Norvell, who enters his seventh season after back-to-back losing records, including a 5-7 finish in 2025.
A fast start is critical. Beating SMU would likely give the Seminoles a 2-0 record heading into a bye week and inject momentum before a high-profile clash with Alabama. A loss, however, would deepen concerns about the program’s direction.
SMU’s head coach: Rhett Lashlee
Coach Rhett Lashlee has built SMU into a consistent contender.
Entering his fourth season, Lashlee owns a 38-16 record with the Mustangs, highlighted by an ACC championship in 2023 and a College Football Playoff appearance in 2024.
His tenure has also included a continued run of bowl eligibility and elevated expectations following SMU’s move into a power conference.

Outlook
This game marks Florida State’s first meaningful measuring stick of the season. SMU is disciplined, experienced and proven at the conference level, making it a dangerous early opponent.
Jennings remains the focal point. In the 2024 meeting, he efficiently dissected FSU’s defense, completing 16 of 23 passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns. Limiting his impact will be central to any Seminoles victory.
The Mustangs’ first trip to Doak Campbell Stadium adds another layer of intrigue. For Florida State, the environment presents an opportunity to make a statement and regain confidence. For SMU, it’s another chance to reinforce its standing as a legitimate ACC contender.
If Florida State is going to signal a turnaround under Norvell, this is the type of game it must win. A 2-0 start would steady the program and shift the narrative, while anything less could intensify scrutiny as the season unfolds.
