Allegiant trims Michigan routes amid discount airline turbulence

Allegiant Air is trimming its flights this summer, including the loss of several Michigan routes, according to Simple Flying’s analysis of Official Airline Guide data.

The affected routes include flights between Flint Bishop International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, Flint and Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport in Florida and Traverse City Cherry Capital Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Other cuts include flights between Grand Rapids Gerald R. Ford International Airport and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.

The changes are part of 61 routes no longer operating networkwide comparing July 2025 and July 2026, according to Simple Flying’s analysis, which also noted that 49 new routes were added during that time.

According to Allegiant’s website, Flint-to-Destin service resumes Oct. 1, while Grand Rapids-to-Destin service resumes Oct. 2.

The cutbacks by the Las Vegas-based discount carrier, which focuses on leisure travelers and service to smaller airports, come amid retrenchment among lower-fare airlines. Spirit Airlines, which was the second-busiest carrier at Detroit Metro Airport, ceased service May 2 and Southwest Airlines pulled out of Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia as of June 4.
