FSU baseball rally late, completes sweep over Notre Dame with 6-4 win

Nathan Cmeyla hit a two-RBI triple in the seventh to push Florida State baseball past Notre Dame, 6-4, on Sunday, April 19, in the series finale at Dick Howser Stadium.

The No. 8 Seminoles (28-11, 12-6 ACC) scored all its runs with two outs and on extra base hits, including four runs in the seventh to rally from a 4-2 deficit. Brayden Dowd hit a double and was brought home by a Chase Williams double in the next at-bat.

After a walk from Hunter Carns, Cmeyla split the gap in left center field, and the ball rolled to the fence. It allowed Williams and Carns to score, and Cmeyla to slide headfirst into third base for a triple, the third of his career.

Cmeyla hit a pair of balls to left field earlier in the game that almost left the yard, but were caught in a heavy breeze blowing to right field. He finished the day 1-for-4 with two RBI, and finished the series with six total. He was brought home after his triple on a double from Brody DeLamielleure, who didn’t start the game.

The right fielder replaced John Stuetzer, who injured his hand while sliding into third base on a steal attempt in the third inning. DeLamielleure made the most of his appearance, going 2-for-3, with a two-run home run in the fourth and the seventh inning double.

Cooper Whithed started his second game of the week for the Seminoles. He threw 33 pitches in FSU’s win over Stetson on Tuesday, and he threw 3.1 innings with three strikeouts, five hits, and two earned runs on 58 pitches against Notre Dame.

Head coach Link Jarrett confirmed that Whithed would be limited with his pitch count, and the Seminoles didn’t push him past 60 pitches as he totaled 92 in the week.

The collection of Cole Stokes, Cade O’Leary, Brodie Purcell and Chris Knier finished the game on the mound. The four pitchers combined for seven strikeouts, with three coming from O’Leary.

FSU recorded 11 total hits and had double-digit hits in each game of the series. The Seminoles had seven total extra-base hits in the series finale and 15 extra-base hits in the three games.
