Freeze watch issued for part of Treasure Coast; wind chill could be 20s

A freeze watch has been issued for part of the Treasure Coast for overnight Jan. 15 when temperatures are expected to feel like they’re in the 20s.

It’s in effect for areas west of Interstate 95 in Indian River and St. Lucie counties, but not Martin County, said Cassie Leahy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

The freeze watch is a heads up that temperatures could get close to freezing on the night of Jan. 15 into the morning of Jan. 16, Leahy said.

She also expected a cold weather advisory to be issued because the wind chill is expected to be in the upper to mid-20s.

That’s all before another cold front is expected to arrive at the end of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend.

Rain chances were slight during the day Jan. 14 at 20% but increase after midnight to 40-50%, Leahy said.

Those chances continue into the morning of Jan. 15 but taper off as the cold front continues to move south, she said, leaving a dry Jan. 16 and holiday weekend.

Temperatures remain pleasant Jan. 14 in the mid-70s during the day and the mid-50s at night, Leahy said.

High temperatures were expected to be in the upper 60s on Jan. 15 before they drop that night and into the next morning to the low to mid-30s, Leahy said.

The weekend should stay chilly and cool with high temperatures in the low 60s during the day on Jan. 16, she said, which is about 10 degrees cooler than normal for that time of the year. That night is expected to be in the upper 30s to mid-40s.

High temperatures on Jan. 17 reach the low 70s during the day, Leahy said, followed by the 40s and 50s at night and then the upper 60s the next day.

Another cold front is expected to move through the area on the night of Jan. 18, she said, dropping temperatures back down to the upper to mid-30s.
