Florida State soccer beats Wake Forest 4-1, books ACC tournament ticket

Florida State soccer beat Wake Forest 4-1 on Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Seminole Soccer Complex, to secure its spot in the ACC tournament.

Forward Jordynn Dudley scored a brace for the second straight game, taking her season tally to nine goals, only behind Wrianna Hudson’s 11 goals. She was instrumental in FSU’s win, and both Taylor Suarez and Yuna McCormack found the back of the net to round out the score sheet for the Seminoles.

While the scoreline reflected the quality of the match, the game started with a scary injury to Wake Forest’s Dempsey Brown. She collided with Dudley in the air just under two minutes into the game and she hit the ground hard before being tended to by medical staff and eventually stretchered off the field and taken to the hospital.

Once play resumed, FSU were on the front foot, with Suarez scoring the opener on a free kick in the 10th minute. She fired her strike into the top corner, beating the outstretched hand of Demon Deacons goalkeeper Valentina Amaral. Dudley would double score after winning a penalty in the 21st minute, and scoring it with a strike into the top right corner.

FSU held a 2-0 advantage at halftime and outshot Wake 8-3, with six shots on goal. It was more of the same for FSU in the second half, as the Seminoles scored a pair to secure the win.

Dudely scored her second of the night in spectacular fashion, beating a defender one-on-one with a spin before thumping the ball into the top corner in the 53rd minute. Waie Forest scored its lone goal of the night two minutes later, taking advantage of miscommunication in the FSU backline, allowing Sierra Sythe to tap into an empty net.

Any Wake Forest comeback hopes were quickly quelled when McCormack scored in the 62nd minute, bundling home a loose ball in the penalty area for her third score of the year.

What’s next for FSU soccer? The ACC Tournament

FSU will advance to the ACC tournament and be either the third or fourth overall seed. The Seminoles will host either the fifth or sixth overall seed, either Louisville or Virginia, with the winner advancing to face the one of the two top overall seeds in Cary, North Carolina.

The first game of the ACC tournament will be Sunday, Nov. 2, with kickoff at either 6 p.m. or 8 p.m.

The Seminoles have won five consecutive ACC tournament titles.
