Florida State defeats Virginia in series finale, 9-3

The No. 7 Florida State Seminoles wrapped up the final game of their three-game series with the Virginia Cavaliers with a thrilling 9-3 win on Saturday in Charlottesville. They have risen to 24-7 (9-3, ACC) on the season, and have now defeated a top-10-ranked team in the country.

In the first inning, it was a scoreless tie. But in the second, Florida State’s Cal Fisher homered, driving in Kelvyn Paulino Jr. and putting FSU up 2-0.

TVirginia was blanked for the third inning, and the Seminoles were able to add two more runs thanks to a Hunter Carns double that saw Brayden Dowd score. Eli Putnam singled, and Carns scored the second run.

A scoreless fourth was broken up by another pair of FSU runs, with Paulino Jr. scoring from second after a Carter McCulley single. A Chase Williams double let McCulley come home to make it a 6-0 lead for the Seminoles.

Three runs in the seventh on the back of a McCulley double, Williams’ grounder, and Noah Sheffield’s sacrifice fly let Fisher, Stuetzer, and McCulley score respectively.

Virginia finally got on the board in the bottom of the 8th with a Kyle Johnson homer and an Antonio Perrotta homer. Their luck would run out as in the ninth, but not before Joe Trioly hit a huge homer to cut the deficit to six. FSU eventually got the three outs to secure the game and series with a fun 9-3 win.

The Seminoles will look to extend their winning streak when they welcome their bitter rival, the Florida Gators, to Tallahassee for a match on Tuesday, April 7. Fans can catch that game on ESPN 2 at 7p.m. ET.
