The Florida football program got some good news on Monday with the announcement that safety Asa Turner will return to Gainesville to play for the Gators in the upcoming 2025 campaign.
Turner was granted a seventh year of eligibility via a medical hardship waiver back in March, but it was not fully clear if he intended to re-embrace the Orange and Blue this fall. His journey over the years has been quite a fascinating one.
“It’s an interesting situation because I came into college starting my true freshman season in the middle of the year, so I didn’t redshirt,” Turner explained last August. “COVID happened and I got a fifth-year, medical redshirt last year, so now I’ve got six years.”
However, whether he will join the roster as a scholarship player or a preferred walk-on still remains in limbo.
The former transfer from the Washington Huskies played just one game in a Gators uniform: the 2024 season opener against the Miami Hurricanes. He started that game and recorded a tackle before exiting with a leg injury. He has since recovered from hamstring lengthening surgery on his right leg, which he underwent on Feb. 7.
