Things went quiet at Condron Family Ballpark during Florida baseball’s 11th fall scrimmage on Saturday.
Jacksonville transfer Jaden Bastian suffered a compound fracture while running past first base, as first reported by freelance reporter Hunter DeLauder for Gators Online. He tripped, and athletic trainers immediately ran onto the field. Players took a knee in concern for their teammate. Bastian needed a stretcher to get off the field and into an ambulance.
The Gainesville Sun confirmed via a Florida spokesperson that Bastian will have surgery.
Bastian is a five-tool talent who had immediate starting potential. He batted .302/.433/.552 with the Dolphins and crushed fastballs as one of the ASUN’s most dangerous hitters in 2025. Bastian hit 11 home runs and stole 36 bases last season.
It’s far too early for any return timeline speculation. A current Gators player added that “It’s probably worse than what you’ve been told,” sparking memories of Florida basketball’s Micah Handlogten going down with a compound fracture two seasons ago.
Handlogten planned to sit out all of last year, but he returned. That’s not to say Bastian will do the same.
