The Tallahassee Democrat and other USA TODAY Network sites offer a free earthquake database that is updated with information from the past hour and earthquake data every 10 minutes based on input from contributing seismic networks.

Was there an earthquake in Florida? What makes an earthquake “significant”?

News reports show tremors from the 6.1 earthquake in Cuba were felt in parts of Southwest Florida, Orlando and Tampa. WDW News Today, which covers Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in the Lake Buena Vista area, reported guests at the Magic Kingdom and other Disney parks felt the June 8 quake. The National Weather Service-Miami posted on X a tweet about the aftermath felt here.

The Tallahassee Democrat earthquake database contains an earthquake map and graphics, including one that tracks by state how many earthquakes experienced and how many per year. Earthquakes considered “significant events” earn that title due to a combination of magnitude, number of “Did You Feel It?” responses, and a PAGER alert level.

Interestingly, the database shows Florida had one earthquake so far this year, but Alaska and California have had more than 19,000 each as of June 8, 2026.

Florida, which is well known for its hurricanes and tropical storms over earthquakes and sinkholes, is in the beginning stages of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to Nov. 30 every year.
