Mandatory minicamp will take place for the Jacksonville Jaguars from June 9-11. This is often the last big milestone in the NFL offseason calendar before training camp arrives in late July.
Through the first two weeks of OTA practices, we’ve gained some valuable insights into where things stand on the depth chart, along with who may be standing out early on, but questions at each position group remain, and that’s normal at this time of the year. It won’t be until training camp and the preseason take place that playing time and final roster decisions are made.
So as part of our Jaguars’ minicamp preview, let’s highlight one thing to watch for at each position group this season. Up next is the safety position.
What kind of impact can Caleb Ransaw have in Year 2?
Unfortunately, Ransaw missed his rookie season due to a foot injury. This year, Ransaw doesn’t have to step into a starting role with Eric Murray and Antonio Johnson on the roster, but he could carve out a significant role.
Under defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile, we saw a lot of three safety looks from the Jaguars last season. Ransaw could earn snaps in those formations.
In addition to that, if Ransaw can provide a stable presence at deep safety, which is where he was often lining up last summer, that frees up Campanile to continue moving Johnson around, who filled a variety of roles last season.
Ransaw brings impressive speed to the position and, in college, was stingy in coverage, a sound tackler, and a versatile defender.
“To not obviously have a lot of the experience that he was able to get last year, having a quote-unquote red shirt, if you will,” Liam Coen said of Ransaw’s rookie season during OTAs. “So he was in his playbook, he was watching tape and doing all those things, but it’s so hard to take a step and really feel comfortable without doing it. This time is huge for Caleb to actually go through those motions, to make those calls, to see the defense work from his vantage point and how things, you know, work together. So I think it’s huge for Caleb.”
