Baker Mayfield is aware of the double standard he receives on his attitude

Baker Mayfield has always unapologetically been himself. Going back to his days at Texas Tech and Oklahoma, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback has never shied away from the personality he has that gives him an edge. If you are a fan of the team he is on, you love the energy he gives your team; if he isn’t, then you most likely despise the approach he has to the game.

Either way, everyone has an opinion on him, and Baker Mayfield is aware of it.

On Wednesday, he opened up about the double standard he receives. In another moment of honesty, Mayfield shared, “Early on in my career, it was ‘cocky, immature.’ Now it’s ‘moxie’ and ‘he’s a dog.’ Same sh— different day. As long as you play well, they change the narrative, but you’ve just gotta be yourself, and I’ve always been like that.”

He was traded away from the Cleveland Browns in favor of Deshaun Watson, he was cut from the Carolina Panthers, and he was not brought back by the Los Angeles Rams. All those things brought him to Tampa Bay, which is now all in on Mayfield.

The team has rallied behind him, and they are winning as a result. They embrace his attitude and it has allowed him to become the football player we see that is potentially an MVP frontrunner through five weeks of the season.
