MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins are wrapping up their first week of training camp and the roster will be sorted out sooner than later.
Consider that Miami opens its preseason schedule at Chicago on August 10.
General manager Chris Grier is moving on from such older players as Terron Armstead, Calais Campbell, Raheem Mostert, Odell Beckham, Jr., Jalen Ramsey and Jordan Poyer.
Grier is hoping rookie Kenneth Grant (DT) and Jonah Savaiinaea (G) are immediate impact starters.
Here’s a look at the Dolphins’ projected 53-man roster and depth chart
Quarterbacks (2)
Tua Tagovailoa, Zach Wilson
Let’s put rookie Quinn Ewers on the practice squad.
Wide Receivers (5)
Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Malik Washington, Dee Eskridge
Let’s put Tahj Washington and undrafted rookies Theo Wease and Andrew Armstrong on practice squad. Tahj vs. Dee is intriguing.
Running Backs (4)
De’Von Achane, Jaylen Wright, Alexander Mattison, Ollie Gordon
Miami moving on from Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson. They’ve drafted running backs in three consecutive drafts.
Fullback (1)
Alec Ingold
Pro Bowler.
Offensive Line (9)
Patrick Paul, Jonah Savaiinaea, Aaron Brewer, James Daniels, Austin Jackson, Kion Smith, Larry Borom, Liam Eichenberg, Daniel Brunskill
The Dolphins are moving on from Terron Armstead, Kendall Lamm, Robert Jones and Lester Cotton. Saviinaea and Daniels should provide improved play at guard. Brunskill is a recent addition. Andrew Meyer or Jackson Carman could take one of the last two spots. Braden Daniels could be a factor, too.
Tight end (3)
Darren Waller, Pharaoh Brown, Julian Hill
The Dolphins move on from Jonnu Smith and Durham Smythe and add Darren Waller. We’ll say Tanner Conner is the last cut here, just ahead of undrafted rookie Jalin Conyers, but it’s a battle. And neither is guaranteed a spot.
Defensive Line (5)
Zach Sieler, Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips, Benito Jones, Matt Dickerson
Calais Campbell is off to Arizona and Da’Shawn Hand is off to the Chargers. We’ll put seventh-rounder Zeek Biggers on practice squad. We’ll go with Dickerson over Ben Stille, but Miami could add a veteran here.
Linebacker/Edge (8)
Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, Chop Robinson, Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson, Willie Gay, K.J. Britt, Quinton Bell
Miami has moved on from David Long, Emmanuel Ogbah, Duke Riley and Anthony Walker. Eugene Asante, Channing Tindall, Cam Goode and Grayson Murphy are all fighting for a spot. Mo Kamara is the last cut here but he’s still got a good shot.
Cornerback (7)
Storm Duck, Mike Hilton, Jason Marshall Jr., Cam Smith, Kendall Sheffield, Jack Jones, Ethan Bonner
The Dolphins have traded Jalen Ramsey. They’ve cut Kendall Fuller. Siran Neal has left. Artie Burns and Kader Kohou are out for the season. Mike Hilton and Jack Jones are the latest additions. BJ Adams, Isaiah Johnson and Cornell Armstrong could all enter mix.
Safety (6)
Minkah Fitzpatrick, Ifeatu Melifonwu, Ashtyn Davis, Elijah Campbell, Patrick McMorris, Dante Trader Jr.
Jevon Holland was paid by the Giants. Jordan Poyer will be moving on. The Dolphins have some intriguing new options. Six safeties seems like a lot and it’s certainly possible Miami goes with five. But these are quality players.
Special Teams (3)
Jason Sanders, Ryan Stonehouse, Joe Cardona
Joe Cardona has replaced Blake Ferguson. Stonehouse will battle Jake Bailey.
