Aftershock in Gulf measures 4.9 magnitude week after initial earthquake

This time, it was an aftershock.

Another earthquake has hit off the coast of Cuba, and some Floridians felt the rumble on the morning of June 15.

But this was actually an aftershock from the Magnitude 6.1 earthquake that occurred in the Gulf last week, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, or USGS.

USGS is reporting a Magnitude 4.9 earthquake at 1:37 p.m. in water that’s about 10 miles deep.

At least five aftershock incidents were reported in Puerto Rico as well on June 15, according to USGS tracking maps.

Eric Oglesby, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said NWS didn’t get any reports of shakes here as of about 4 p.m. June 15.

“It’s an aftershock,” said Steven Socieszczyk, USGS spokesman. Typically, for earthquakes larger than magnituge 6.0, smaller aftershocks can follow for months to years later. They will continue to decrease in size and frequency.”

Aftershock did not trigger a Tsunami Warning Center advisory

Also, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, did not issue a tsunami advisory or warning for Southwest Florida.

Our area is the closest to Cuba outside of Florida Keys and Everglades National Park.

“Usually, a 4.9 magnitude doesn’t produce a tsunami,” Oglesby said.

He said aftershocks are always a concern.
