9/11 ceremonies, memorials across Brevard: Where to observe Patriot Day

Patriot Day, observed on Thursday, Sept. 11, commemorates those who lost their lives in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Events across the Space Coast will honor the day.

Due to potential changes and cancellations, we encourage you to check with presenting organizations about the status of their events. Please note that not all of these events take place on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Melbourne 9/11 Memorial 5K

Run or walk in the Melbourne 9/11 Memorial 5K in Eau Gallie Square, 1453 Highland Ave., on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 7:30 a.m. The race route crosses the Eau Gallie Causeway. Proceeds will benefit the Melbourne Firefighters. The cost is $40 in advance or $45 on the day of the race. Visit runsignup.com.

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony in Rockledge

Join the City of Rockledge at Rockledge Civic Hub, 530 Barton Blvd., on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 9 a.m. to honor the lives lost and the heroes who emerged on September 11, 2001. This solemn ceremony will feature moving musical tributes, dynamic speakers, and a wreath-laying ceremony to pay respects to the victims, first responders, military members, and all those impacted by the events of that day. Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony in Palm Bay

The event will take place at Sacrifice Park, 120 Malabar Road SE, Palm Bay, on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. The ceremony will include remarks from guest speakers and moments of reflection to commemorate this day of national significance. Visit palmbayfl.gov.

Patriot Day Ceremony in West Melbourne

Join Sheriff Wayne Ivey, West Melbourne Deputy Mayor Bentley and Lieutenant Colonel “Lou” Hoffman US Army (retired) to pay tribute to those that lost their lives on 9/11. The event will be at Sunflower House, 3125 Fell Road, West Melbourne, on Sept. 11 from 10 to 11 a.m. It will include a special pinning ceremony for veterans and first responders, music by AmBRASSadors Ensemble and Satellite High School chorus, and colors presented by Satellite Junior ROTC. 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Merritt Island

There will be a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center plaza and Gray Hall, 400 S. Sykes Creek Pkwy, Merritt Island, on Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. The event will feature police and fire color guards, fife and drum corp and speakers who were in New York City and Washington, D.C. on 9/11. Patriot Day event at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery

Volunteers will gather at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, 5525 U.S. 1, Mims, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 11 to help clean headstones and beautify the grounds. The effort is part of Carry the Load’s annual nationwide Patriot Day event. The non-profit hosts volunteer events each Memorial Day, Patriot Day, and Veterans Day to honor and remember our nation’s heroes by connecting Americans to the sacrifices made by our military and first responder communities. World Trade Center Memorial in Viera

Guests are welcome to pay their respects at the Avenue Viera, 2261 Town Center Ave., on Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The World Trade Center memorial site, which has remnants of the World Trade Center, is located across from AMC Theatres. There will be flowers and flags available for guests to leave at the site or take with them in memory of the fallen. Visit avenueviera.com.
