3 To Know: Summer arrives Sunday; 80% back commercial flights for Naples

1. SEASONS CHANGE: Astronomical summer set to arrive June 21

The longest day of the year is coming up, and it’s going to bring in the start of summer and lots of sunshine.

The summer solstice, which marks the first day of astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere, will occur on June 21 at 4:24 a.m. ET, according to NASA. Around this time, the Northern Hemisphere will experience its longest days and shortest nights of the year.

Summer solstice happens when our planet’s northernmost tip is tilted toward the sun, according to the Smithsonian Science Education Center. In December, when the winter solstice occurs, it will tilt away from the sun.

The tilt happens because our planet rotates on its axis at a 23.5-degree tilt, the National Weather Service stated on its website.

Some areas, like Utqiagvik, Alaska, have already begun to experience months of endless daylight, according to USA TODAY’s previous reporting. – Julia Gomez and Mary Walrath-Holdridge/USA TODAY

2. AA RETURNING: 80% back commercial flights for Naples

Collier County and Naples residents appear to want commercial airline service at the Naples Airport.

A survey commissioned by the Naples Airport Authority (NAA) and conducted May 27-June 1 by American Pulse Research & Polling shows 80.3% are in favor – that’s eight in 10 people.

Of the Naples residents, 73.9% of respondents view the return of daily commercial airline service as favorable.

The survey was taken after American Airlines told the NAA it plans to start daily service between Naples and Charlotte, North Carolina, beginning in December. The NAA Board of Commissioners asked for the survey to determine the community’s opinion.

Had the outcome shown resounding opposition, the NAA still can’t turn away American Airlines or any other airline that might want to start scheduled service at the Naples Airport as long as there is room, capacity and the planes meet the weight limits of the runways, according to Federal Aviation Administration rules.
