Authorities are seeking a driver who fled the scene of a crash that left a woman dead and a man injured along Sheep Creek Road in Phelan on Wednesday night.
The wreck took place just after 10 p.m. May 20 on along Sheep Creek Road at Dos Palmas Road, according to California Highway Patrol logs.
It involved a black Nissan Rogue SUV and a white GMC 5500 pickup truck, officials said.
The Nissan had been headed south along Sheep Creek Road, north of Dos Palmas Road, according to a CHP statement. The pickup truck was believed to have been stopped in the southbound lanes at Dos Palmas Road.
“For reasons still under investigation, a traffic crash occurred involving both vehicles at the intersection,” the statement said. The SUV overturned in the collision.
A woman riding as a passenger in the Nissan died from her injuries at the scene, officials said. Her identity was not yet released by coroner’s officials.
A man who had been driving the Nissan was hospitalized.
The involved pickup truck “fled the scene and was located abandoned in the desert,” according to the statement. “The driver of the GMC fled in an unknown direction.”
No further details were available.
