Matthew Stafford is going to be in Los Angeles for a while longer. The Rams and Stafford have agreed to a one-year extension worth $55 million, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The deal has a max value of $60 million with incentives, paying the reigning MVP handsomely after his career-best season in 2025.
Stafford is now signed through the 2027 season and can earn up to $105 million in total for the next two years. The Rams made Stafford’s new contract official, announcing that he has been extended.
Stafford, 38, has signed new contract extensions with the Rams in each of the last three offseasons, including this year. Retirement doesn’t seem to be an option for him right now, especially coming off an MVP season when he led the NFL in passing yards and touchdown passes.
The Rams drafted his successor in the first round when they selected Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick, but it’s clear he’ll have to wait his turn before having a chance to become the Rams’ starter.
Stafford was originally acquired by the Rams in 2021, trading Jared Goff and draft picks to the Lions for the veteran QB. He won the Super Bowl in his first season in L.A., coincidentally at SoFi Stadium in February of 2022.
It just so happens that this year’s Super Bowl is also being played at SoFi, so perhaps history will repeat itself.
