The chances of the Chargers trading star quarterback Justin Herbert are slim to none.
The veteran quarterback has established himself as one of the top players in the league and certainly in his position.
The Chargers have a franchise quarterback in their hands, but if they ever decided to sell high on Herbert, they would get a massive haul, at least according to ESPN’s Bill Barnwell.
Barnwell recently listed players on each NFL team who could command a first-round pick in a potential trade, and he valued Herbert at a staggering four first-round picks.
“Herbert hasn’t yet put together the MVP season that so many people think he’s capable of producing, but just about every coach in football would be desperate to have a quarterback with Herbert’s arm strength and throwing talent.
“At 28, Herbert is a couple of years younger than Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, which also helps a bit. Injuries are a real concern (even if Herbert plays through them), but I have him just slightly ahead of Joe Burrow in terms of trade value because of the age gap.”
The only quarterbacks with greater trade value, according to Barnwell, are Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes and Drake Maye.
While those four picks would be of great value to the Chargers, a sure-fire thing in Herbert is just as good, or even better.
The former Oregon product is arguably at the peak of his powers. Herbert is set to enter his seventh season in the league, and it will be his biggest yet.
If the 28-year-old can prove to be a consistent MVP candidate moving forward, the Chargers could reach heights their franchise has never experienced before.
That is the biggest question surrounding Herbert, and the 2026 season should provide plenty of answers.
