The notion of adding LeBron James to the Golden State Warriors is rapidly becoming a hot topic among both the media and the fanbase. The veteran superstar is heading into unrestricted free agency this summer and may not return to the Los Angeles Lakers. As such, a potential team-up with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green has been floated as a logical next step for James, who will turn 42 in the coming months.
However, Chandler Parsons has warned that adding James, at this point of his career, to an aging Warriors core won’t provide the results most fans dream of. Parsons noted how even with James, the Warriors would be unlikely to reach the level of the San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder or potentially the Houston Rockets.
“Do they win a championship? No,” Parsons said, via FanDuel TV’s ‘Run It Back.’ “What do they do? What’s the ceiling if they do this? We’re talking the Western Conference with Spurs, San Antonio, OKC. Denver, Houston, Lakers, Minnesota. Like, they’re not going to be better than most of those upper-echelon teams. Now, it would be awesome. It would be incredible to see Steph, Draymond, and LeBron James wear a jersey in that arena. For Steve Kerr, I think it would be a cool story. I don’t think it moves the needle for the Warriors to be a championship contender, though, at all.”
Should the Warriors want to bridge the gap between themselves and the top-tier teams in the Western Conference, they would need to make some additional moves alongside adding James. Of course, Jimmy Butler’s eventual return from a torn ACL would provide a sizeable boost. Nevertheless, the front office must resolve the glaring hole at the center position while also nailing their upcoming draft pick.
Adding James isn’t the boost it used to be. Nevertheless, some smart roster building alongside his addition could position Golden State to be a shock contender in the West, assuming everyone can stay healthy.
