The Golden State Warriors will head into the NBA Draft armed with the 11th pick. With multiple gaps to plug in Steve Kerr’s rotation, there will be no shortage of options on the board when the Warriors are on the clock. A big man has been the most logical target, considering the team has struggled to find a long-term solution at that position in recent years.
However, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Warriors may look to trade out of the draft, with Trey Murphy of the New Orleans Pelicans of interest.
“Golden State has also been one of many interested suitors in New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III, and the two teams have discussed concepts involving the No. 11 pick, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto reported. “As previously reported by HoopsHype, the Pelicans have searched for a trade into the lottery and are targeting a player. Nate Ament has been mentioned as one potential candidate for the Pelicans.”
Murphy, 26, would fit perfectly with the younger core the Warriors are building around Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Nevertheless, the risk of missing out on a high-upside, cost-controlled rookie big is real. Golden State would be trading away potential upside for proven NBA production, which, given the team’s desire to contend during Curry’s final years, would arguably be the right play.
With the first round of the draft now just hours away, Warriors fans won’t have to wait too long to find out what direction the front office is going to take. However, if Murphy is truly available, it’s certainly worth exploring what a trade package could potentially look like.
