Scores of volunteers converged on Point Mugu State Park in Ventura County this weekend to clear brush, smooth tread and make repairs on local trails.
The Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council held its 43rd annual Trail Days from April 17-19. The free event gives people a chance to help the local park, camp for free and build community, said George Sherman, president of the Trails Council. The all-volunteer group has helped to build and maintain trails since 1969.
This year, vegetation got a boost from early season storms, and a bumper crop of grasses took a toll on some trails. Over the weekend, volunteers worked on locations, including a stretch of the popular Backbone Trail, the group said.
This year’s event was expected to be one of the biggest with more than 200 showing up to help, Sherman said.
The Trails Council, Santa Monica Mountains Task Force of the Sierra Club and Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association, the California State Parks and the National Park Service help put on the event.
