On Wednesday, USC picked up a commitment from four-star class of 2027 cornerback Danny Lang. Lang chose the Trojans over Ohio State and Oregon.
Following the news, USC’s social media team decided to do a little trolling of the Ducks. In a video that they posted, green grass was painted over with Cardinal spray paint, followed by the words, “Guess the grass wasn’t greener” appearing on the screen.
The caption, of course, was a shot at Oregon head coach Dan Lanning. Following rumors that he was considering leaving for the Alabama job two years ago, Lanning shut them down in a video that featured the viral line, “The grass is damn green in Eugene.”
On one hand, the post was funny. After all, rivalries are a huge part of what make college football so amazing. USC taking a shot at Oregon in the middle of the offseason is certainly a great way to keep the bad blood brewing.
On the other hand, the Trojans are not necessarily in the best position to talk smack here. While they have finally been recruiting at an elite level the past two cycles, they still have not beaten the Ducks on the field since 2016.
If USC loses to Oregon again this fall, you can fully expect Ducks fans to come back and mock the video. So if anything, this further increases the Trojans’ urgency to win that game.
In general, that is the nature of sports. When you win, a little bit of smack talk can be funny. When you lose, however, it just looks childish and immature. After posting a video like that, USC better win this fall, or else it could come back to bite them in embarrassing fashion.
