Taking the advice of her coach, Alyssa Lopez began keeping a running journal to mark her progress as a track athlete at La Quinta High School. The journal soon became a place where she could not only write down her goals, but also any thoughts that she had about how she could improve.
On Thursday at the Desert Empire League track and field finals, that played into how the senior broke the league record in the 800 meters.
Lopez said that at first she was skeptical about journaling after coach Brian Ansley suggested it. But she gave it a try and now it’s kind of like her secret weapon.
“I did it and I saw the progression,” Lopez said.
Also on Thursday, La Quinta senior Rudy Mendoza set a new league record in the 800 meters, and La Quinta senior Luis-Fernando Martinez broke his own league record in the 1600 meters.
“I think I took a big jump last year,” Mendoza said. “Then, this year it was all about consistency. I’m just happy that I’m getting the results after the work.”
Junior Malia Strange, transferred from Xavier Prep to Shadow Hills this year, but the record-breaking results didn’t stop. She broke multiple league records during her first two years of high school, and on Thursday broke her own league record in the 100 hurdles and in the triple jump.
Palm Desert junior Kingston Penny set a new league mark in the 300 hurdles.
On Tuesday, Palm Desert senior Jonah Toland broke his own league record in the high jump and Shadow Hills senior Joaquin Sterling smashed the previous league record in the discus throw.
So, it was obviously a big day and week for several DEL athletes.
For Lopez, who was also a part of the winning 4×100 relay team, it was a moment years in the making, she said. She had been working and planning, in her journal, how to break the league 800 meters record. She took the time two write down the goal, to strategize the best way to do it and then worked hard to achieve it.
“It helps to remind me that I’ve done the work,” Lopez said of her running journal. “It’s like a confidence builder. I make notes, mentally. It helps me to not think about the races when I’m on the line and to not get into my own head.
“I know that it helped me today.”
