Unauthorized person accessed personal files, information, San Joaquin County Superior Court says

The San Joaquin County Superior Court said an investigation into a cybersecurity incident last year revealed that personal files with sensitive information had been leaked.

On Nov. 7, court officials said the investigation determined that an unauthorized person gained access to some court systems between Oct. 25 and Oct. 30, 2024, and acquired copies of certain files.

The breach involved people’s names, along with Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses, California identification card numbers, tax identification numbers, passport numbers, military identification numbers, account numbers or credit and debit card numbers, medical information and health insurance information.

What should victims affected by breach do next?

The court did not specify how many people were affected, but said it is offering one year of complimentary identity protection services and credit monitoring to anyone whose information was involved.

In October 2024, the San Joaquin County Superior Court experienced significant connectivity issues for days, which affected its ability to conduct business.

The court later determined that the issues were due to a cybersecurity incident.

The court said that upon learning of the unauthorized activity, it took immediate action to contain the incident, began an investigation with the assistance of a cybersecurity firm and informed law enforcement.

“To prevent something like this from happening again, the superior court has taken, and will continue to take, steps to enhance the security of its computer network,” court officials said in a news release.

The court has established a dedicated, toll-free call center to answer questions about the incident. The center can be reached at (844) 354-1371 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
