Apfelthaler was driving a Tesla on the 101 south of Seacliff around 9 a.m. when he apparently let the car drift, hitting a metal guardrail and going over the side of the highway, California Highway Patrol officials previously said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

It was not clear why his vehicle went across the lanes, but neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to be a factor in this crash, the CHP said.
