Southwest Gas volunteers pack kits for the homeless

The Southwest Gas Foundation celebrated its 60th Anniversary “Month of Giving” by hosting a Care Kit Packing event with the Family Assistance Program in Victorville.

Over the weekend, Southwest Gas employee volunteers and their family members partnered with the Family Assistance Program to assemble 1,000 care kits.

The kits will be given to individuals and teens experiencing homelessness in the High Desert.

The Victorville event was one of six volunteer projects taking place across Arizona, Nevada, and California throughout June, the foundation stated.

Supported by a $60,000 donation from the Southwest Gas Foundation, employees across the company’s service territory assembled nearly 6,000 care kits through “Building Lives Up Everywhere” (BLUE), Southwest Gas’ employee volunteer program that empowers employees to give back to their communities.

Helping the homeless

Care kits assembled during the event included a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, socks, washcloth, hairbrush, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, and feminine hygiene products.

The kits will be distributed to unhoused individuals across Victorville through the Family Assistance Program.

Additionally, the kits will also be distributed to teens who will be living in the Family Assistance Program’s new Tiny Home Village that is currently being constructed.

“When you see our employees and their families show up to serve, it really brings our Foundation’s 60-year legacy to life,” said Southwest Gas Southern California Division Vice President, Sam Grandlienard. “We are grateful for the partnerships we’ve built with organizations like the Family Assistance Program, because they’re making a real impact in people’s lives. That kind of collaboration is how we support our neighbors and build stronger communities.”

The partnership

The event also highlighted Southwest Gas’ long-standing relationship with the Family Assistance Program.

Through both volunteerism and philanthropic support, Southwest Gas and the Southwest Gas Foundation have partnered with the organization to provide critical support services.

“Events like this demonstrate the impact that can be made when organizations, volunteers, and community partners come together around a shared purpose,” said Jobi Wood, Family Assistance Program Director of Youth Services, FAMSPOT, and Youth Drop-in Center.

Wood added that the support of Southwest Gas and the Southwest Gas Foundation helps the nonprofit extend its reach and better serve individuals facing difficult circumstances.

“We are grateful for their continued commitment to strengthening our community and supporting those who need it most,” Wood said.
