Could Maverik be California's Buc-ee's? How gas and food stops compare

Maverik gas stations and road travel stops dot major highways throughout California and the American West — including in Anderson, just south of Redding and Orland off Interstate 5.

Could the Utah-based chain become the West’s version of Buc-ee’s, the South’s popular stop for meals and gas?

The two chains offer breakfast and lunch menus with desserts, with popular burrito and sandwich combinations.

Maverik usually offers motorists more value meal deals and to-go meals. Here’s how the two chains compare.

How Maverik’s menu compares to Buc-ee’s

Maverik offers meals exclusive to its chain including specialty pizza, burgers, sandwiches including toasted subs and sausages and hot dogs. Its menu includes a dozen breakfast and lunch burrito choices.

Maverik locations cater to motorists looking for its exclusive BonFire brand, made fresh at each location, the chain said.

Maverik’s value meals are mostly served as portable to-go items. Prices vary from $4 and $7 daily. In June, specials included the hot dog meal with a soda and chips for $5, a personal pizza or two pizza slices with a Coke for $7 and a Red Bull and breakfast sandwich deal for $6.

Meal deals can change weekly, and there’s a Monday Adventure Club special for $4. Customers can see what meal deal is offered each week by downloading the app at maverik.com/food.

Maverik’s menu also includes “coffee blends from around the world.”

Buc-ee’s menu is a bit closer to family restaurant fare, but the Texas-based chain serves similar sandwiches and burritos. Buc-ee’s menu includes more barbecue and Tex-Mex options, like its sliced brisket sandwich ($14.95).

Buc-ee’s meals tend to be more pricey, but portions are big, online reviewers said. Lunch meals range from roughly $7 to $15, while breakfasts and pastries start under $4.

Both chains sell a variety of cookies and desserts.

How motorists online say Maverik and Buc-ee’s stack up

Maverik is where drivers stop on their way to their destination, according to Utah-based YouTube presenter Matts Off Road Recovery, while Buc-ee’s is its own destination.

Here is how motorists on Reddit and Facebook compared the two.

Wyoming man launched Maverik 98 years ago using roller skate rental money

As of 2026, Maverik has 800 locations in 20 states, including California, according to the chain, and is “the largest independent fuel marketer in the Intermountain West.”

Headquartered in Utah, the gas station chain was founded in Wyoming in 1928. Reuel Call was 20 years old when he opened his first gas station, a two-pump operation in Afton. He used money he earned from roller skate rentals, according to the company’s profile.
