Self-dubbed 'Boring Betty' Yee suspends California governor campaign

California gubernatorial candidate Betty Yee has announced that she is suspending her campaign.

“Public service has been the honor of my lifetime … This campaign has always been about something much bigger than any one candidate. It’s about building a California, where opportunity is real and owned, gains trust by being responsive and accountable. And where no one is left behind. It’s a vision of a global economy, where prosperity is shared,” Yee said during a virtual news conference Monday, April 20.

Most recent polling showed Yee capturing between 1.4% and 2% of likely voters.

Yee declined to endorse a candidate during the conference.

Who is Betty Yee?

Yee is the former California State Controller, who ran for governor on a platform focused on addressing budget issues, reducing government spending, and improving affordability. She positioned herself as one of “California’s top experts on the state budget and government accountability.” Yee said she was running for governor to “build a California that truly adds up for all of us.”

After the allegations of sexual assault against Eric Swalwell surfaced, Yee started branding herself as “Boring Betty.”

“Hey California – have you had enough chaos, fear and horrendous political scandals? Are you ready for some calm, cool, collected change?” Yee wrote in an April 16 Facebook post, just four days before announcing her departure from the race. “Some may say that could be boring. But that’s the point. Boring Betty. No crisis. No circus. Just competent, drama-free leadership you can trust.”

The top gubernatorial candidates include:

Other notable Democratic candidates include Matt Mahan, Antonio Villaraigosa, and Tony Thurmond. An additional 51 candidates are also running for governor. A list of candidates and their titles can be found here.
