The Los Angeles Rams made two massive moves to address their defensive secondary this offseason, acquiring Trent McDuffie and signing Jaylen Watson, multi-time Super Bowl winners from the Kansas City Chiefs. On top of that, the team re-signed Kam Curl, building out most of their unit as the team looks to turn a page after last season’s inconsistent play.
However, it appears the team may not be done improving that area of the field. While most pieces are in place, there’s a vacancy at the outside corner spot and with Emmanuel Forbes’ long-term future in doubt, the Rams might be looking to the draft to find an answer.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported that despite adding McDuffie and Watson, the Rams have “continued to do a lot of work on the position even after those acquisitions.”
Also, I listed cornerback as a need, even with McDuffie and Jaylen Watson aboard, just because the Rams continued to do a lot of work on the position even after those acquisitions.”
The Rams have yet to decide on Forbes’ fifth-year option, which they must do by May 1. Les Snead stated the team would not decide until after the draft, which means they’ll evaluate whom they selected first before addressing Forbes.
Outside of Forbes, McDuffie, and Watson, the team does not have another starting-caliber outside corner, and let several defensive backs walk this offseason. If the Rams do select a corner in the first round, his contract – if the fifth-year option is exercised – would run concurrently with McDuffie’s extension and provide a succession plan for the position group moving forward without breaking the bank.
