Mike Macdonald knows Matthew Stafford’s game well. He coached against Stafford four times over his first two seasons as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, going 2-2 in those contests.
The Los Angeles Rams veteran has always performed well against the Seahawks, totaling 1,259 yards, 10 touchdowns and just one interception in those contests. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear Macdonald praise Stafford’s game.
During Super Bowl Opening Night this week, Macdonald said Stafford should make the Hall of Fame and has a “dang good chance” to win NFL MVP in 2025.
“Matthew is a phenomenal quarterback,” Macdonald said. “A Hall-of-Fame quarterback—dang good chance he’s gonna be the MVP.”
It’s easy to say these things when your team is days away from playing in a Super Bowl and the Rams are watching from home, but Macdonald knows he’ll likely see Stafford again if the Rams quarterback comes back for another season. And if Stafford doesnt, Macdonald knows he likely went toe-to-toe with a Hall of Fame quarterback.
The MVP is another question entirely, though. The other top finalist is New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, who Macdonald’s Seahawks will face in Super Bowl LX.
So, at the end of the day, Macdonald will have faced the NFL MVP — one way or another.
