Lakers assistant coach is head coaching candidate for Trail Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers unexpectedly made the NBA playoffs this season, but changes could be coming for them this offseason. Rumor has it that they want to move on from head coach Tiago Splitter, who replaced Chauncey Billups early this season.

New owner Thomas Dundon has been looking to cut costs drastically, and it appears that the franchise may not be willing to pay for a proven head coach. Some assistant coaches around the league have been mentioned as candidates, and one of them is Los Angeles Lakers assistant Greg St. Jean, according to Seah Highkin, a reporter who covers the Trail Blazers.

“One more name I have to add that I haven’t seen reported anywhere but have heard is at least getting a look is Lakers assistant Greg St. Jean,” Highkin wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The Lakers hired St. Jean two years ago when JJ Redick became their head coach. He had previously served as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns, and he started out in the NBA as a video coordinator for the Sacramento Kings in 2013.

His father, Garry St. Jean, was a longtime NBA coach. The elder St. Jean most notably served as the head coach of the Sacramento Kings for five seasons in the 1990s.
