Jets WR reportedly wanted Davante Adams to pay him $120k for No. 17

Davante Adams has never worn another number in the NFL besides No. 17. And when he signed with the Los Angeles Rams, there was some questions as to whether or not Puka Nacua would give that jersey number to Adams or ask him to pay for it.

We all know how that saga went, as Nacua ended up switching to No. 12 anyway, which left No. 17 for Adams.

Adams had a much tougher time getting No. 17 when he was traded from the Las Vegas Raiders to the New York Jets, though. SNY’s Connor Hughes reported that then-Jets rookie Malachi Corley wanted Adams to pay him $120,000 for his number after Adams initially offered $20,000.

Corley eventually switched to No. 14, which allowed Adams to take the No. 17 jersey. But, it’s unclear what it cost Adams for that switch.

This is another example of the “dark cloud” Adams said he felt on the other teams he played for before signing with L.A. Adams didn’t have a great time in New York despite being reunited with Aaron Rodgers. Although Adams finished with 854 yards and seven touchdowns to keep his 1,000-yard streak alive (he added 209 in three games for the Raiders to open the season), the Jets went 5-12 on the season and the team release both Adams and Rodgers in the offseason.

Now, he’ll be playing for a Super Bowl contender with a top-10 quarterback in Matthew Stafford, a fellow top-10 receiver in Puka Nacua, and an emerging defense.
