Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk reported on Thursday that the Los Angeles Rams and Myles Garrett agreed to a new contract, giving him an extra $5.5 million this year. However, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network provided clarification later in the day, specifying that it’s not a new deal, but rather an adjustment to his previous contract.
According to Rapoport, the Rams reworked his contract that will pay him $204 million over five years, which is “essentially what he was making.” Garrett will still make the same amount per year as he was set to earn before, but the Rams pushed back the vesting date of his guarantees by a few months.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN added that Garrett will still make $5.5 million more this year, as Florio reported, but the Rams are borrowing money from a future year to give him a raise this season.
Garrett signed a four-year extension worth $160 million last year, which puts him at $40 million per year – sixth among all edge rushers. He’s deserving of a raise, but it seems that for now, the Rams will keep him on his current contract and continue paying him what he was set to earn already.
Garrett is under contract with the Rams through the 2030 season, but Florio noted that there are bonuses available through 2038 for salary cap purposes.
