Deputies with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department received a report at 11:38 a.m. regarding a hiker having an apparent medical emergency along the trail just north of Coyote Canyon Road, according to department spokesperson Sgt. Robert Martinez.

Due to the hiker’s remote location, a rescue helicopter from the sheriff’s aviation unit was requested to hoist the hiker to a designated landing zone. Deputies reached the hiker and provided medical aid, but the hiker was pronounced dead at the scene, Martinez said. He added the aviation unit assisted in retrieving the decedent from the remote area on the hiking trail.

The Riverside County Coroner’s office later identified the deceased individual as Ian Maclurg, a 43-year-old from San Diego. He died on the trail at 12:19 p.m., according to the coroner’s report.

Martinez said Friday that the coroner’s investigation into the incident is ongoing.
