Reginald Matthews Jr., 39, of Hesperia was killed in the hit-and-run, which was first reported about 1:30 a.m. July 27 in the 15200 block of Sequoia Street, at Arroyo Avenue, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials and coroner’s records.

“Deputies arrived at the location regarding a vehicle hitting a pedestrian,” sheriff’s department spokeswoman Lyndsi Garrett said.

Matthews, who was found lying in the westbound traffic lane, was later pronounced dead by first responders, officials said.

Investigators determined he was walking west along Sequoia Street, along the north edge of the roadway, when he was hit.

“The driver of the vehicle collided with Matthews and immediately fled the scene west on Sequoia Street without checking on Matthew’s wellbeing,” according to a sheriff’s department statement. “At this time, it is not known if drugs/alcohol played a factor in this collision.”

No further details, including a description of the involved vehicle and driver, were available as the investigation continued Monday afternoon.

Any witnesses, or anyone with information, can reach the Hesperia Police Department at (760) 947-1500. Information may also be provided anonymously to the WeTip hotline at (844) 909-3096.
