There were 39,963 votes cast in the race for the Daily Press High School Athlete of the Week poll.
Riverside Prep boys soccer player Maddux Camarena ended with 43.4 % of total votes cast by Daily Press readers.
The freshman received 17,343 votes, beating out 15 other high school athletes from across the High Desert.
To earn a spot on the ballot, Camarena scored six goals in four games for the Silver Knights last week. The freshman began the week by scoring Riverside Prep’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Palmdale Academy Charter on Dec. 2. He then scored two goals in a 3-3 draw with Apple Valley on Dec. 5. In the Oak Hills Tournament on Dec. 6, Camarena scored a goal in a 1-0 victory over Oak Hills and scored two in a 3-2 victory over Burroughs.
In the voting, Camarena beat Barstow football player Nicholas Gaoa, who received 32.26% at 12,891 total votes.
The nominees were selected based on performances between Dec. 1 to 6.
Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.
Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week’s games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.
