Former UCLA Bruins head coach Chip Kelly was back in the news on Tuesday. The new Northwestern offensive coordinator looked ready for action, suited up with a purple vest and hardhat.
Kelly’s job with Northwestern is about to start his fourth different job in the past four seasons, jumping from being UCLA’s head coach, to offensive coordinator at Ohio State, then jumping to the NFL to take over as the Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive coordinator before getting fired and returning to the Big Ten with Northwestern.
Kelly met with the media on Tuesday at Ryan Field, which is still undergoing some construction, so Kelly decided to look the part. Ryan Field will be back in action on October 2nd when Kelly and Northwestern host Penn State.
The Wildcats are fresh off of a 7-6 season and not only did Northwestern add Kelly, they also grabbed Jerry Neuheisel as their new quarterbacks coach. Kelly and Neuheisel’s paths crossed in Westwood during Kelly’s six-year tenure with the Bruins.
The Big Ten Conference is filled with Kelly’s former teams, with the longtime coach having spent time at UCLA, Ohio State and most notably with Oregon, where he earned an AP College Football Coach of the Year award.
UCLA fans might not hold Kelly in the highest of regards but he’s been one of the most memeable college football coaches of the 21st century and even won a national title in his lone season with Ohio State.
