The Tennessee Volunteers’ newly-anointed starting quarterback and former UCLA quarterback commit, Joey Aguilar, spoke to the media this week. Aguilar talked about being named the starting quarterback for the Vols.
Aguilar was named the starting quarterback on Sunday by the Vols head coach Josh Heupel after transferring from the Bruins earlier in the offseason. The senior quarterback said he was filled with excitement for the opportunity to start for the Vols and would detail how he was able to earn the starting job. Vols Wire has more here:
“It was a lot coming in with such a short amount of time, but I grinded out the days,” he said. “Being here in the early mornings and late nights, and would just go out there and watch film, talk to the coaches, and just try to get the game plans going and get the concept of the offense down. It took a while, but I got it down. I was able to go out there and perform in the scrimmages and stuff like that.”
The veteran signal caller’s hard work has paid off as he earned the trust of his head coach, but he will have to keep it up to earn the trust of the rest of the college football world.
The year prior the current Bruins’ starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava took the Vols to a 10-3 record in the SEC, which will leave high expectations for Aguilar to match.
Iamaleava and Aguilar have both been named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List and their names will continue to be brought up together as the college football world looks to determine who was the better quarterback.
