At one point, Todd Gurley was on top of the NFL world. The former Los Angeles Rams first-round pick won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2015 and led the NFL in rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns twice (in 2017 and 2018).
The Rams moved on from Gurley after only five seasons and he played one more season in the NFL in 2020 before he officially retired in 2022.
Gurley doesn’t seem to miss his playing days, though. The three-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro told the Rams’ D’Marco Farr that he’s enjoying being a fan and watching football now that he’s 31 and a few years removed from the league.
“It feels good to be able to get out the bed and not have to take like 10 steps to warm up,” Gurley joked. “I just enjoy being a fan now and and talking stuff, being a critic a little bit.”
Gurley finished his NFL career with 6,082 rushing yards and 67 touchdowns, most of which were with the Rams. His 5,404 rushing yards with the Rams rank sixth in franchise history, and his 68 touchdowns with the team are tied for first with Marshall Faulk. Gurley did all this in just 73 games.
The Rams struggled to find Gurley’s replacement when they released him after the 2019 season. It wasn’t untile Kyren Williams broke out in 2023 that L.A. seemed to find a true workhorse running back to tote the load Gurley did during his time with the team.
Both sides are in good places, though. Gurley is enjoying his time away from the gridiron and the Rams are enjoying their new franchise running back in Williams.
