The Chargers have had themselves quite an offseason.
They’ve revamped and retooled like few teams this offseason, and their biggest offseason acquisition may have been offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.
After serving as the Dolphins’ head coach for the last four seasons, McDaniel heads to sunny Southern California with the goal of taking the Chargers’ offense —and Justin Herbert — to the next level.
There’s no denying Herbert’s talent from the moment he stepped onto an NFL field; however, many wonder if the 28-year-old could take his game to the next level.
With McDaniel running things now, the expectation is that he will make things easier for himself. And some believe that an MVP could be on the horizon for the now veteran quarterback, including for NFL safety, Donte Whitner.
Whitner appeared on Good Morning Football and said McDaniel could unlock Herbert to have an MVP-type campaign this upcoming season.
“This will be the best offensive partnership that Justin Herbert has ever had in his career,” Whitner said.
“This will be the season where Justin Herbert has the easiest throws of his career, based on the ability to run the ball, make the play-action look like the run, the RPO game, the timing routes and inside throws. And then when it’s time to show that arm talent, the deep crossing routes and over routes.
“This could be an MVP year for Justin Herbert.”
The possibilities are endless when it comes to McDaniel and Herbert.
The past two seasons under Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers’ offense has not lived up to expectations. Under former OC Greg Roman, the offense did not show up when it mattered most, combining for 15 points in their two playoff appearances and losses.
That is expected to change with McDaniel leading the charge.
While regular season success and a potential MVP could be on the horizon for Herbert, the addition of McDaniel should get the most out of the quarterback when it matters most: in the playoffs.
