The Victor Valley Union High School District is putting local students on the fast track to university acceptance, becoming the first local school district to enter into a direct admission agreement with Cal State San Bernardino.
This groundbreaking agreement helps students find an easier path to college, as long as they satisfy the completion of A-G coursework and a minimum GPA as defined by CSUSB.
The VVUHSD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a memorandum of understanding with CSUSB that will allow eligible seniors to be proactively admitted to the area’s nearest major university.
“The goal of this program is to remove some of the obstacles and uncertainties that face students and their families as they prepare to take the next step in their educational journey,” Superintendent Carl Coles said. “We are proud to strengthen our partnership with Cal State San Bernardino as both institutions strive to better serve our region.”
Qualifying seniors from Adelanto, Silverado and Victor Valley high schools, as well as Cobalt Institute of Math & Science, Goodwill Education Center, Lakeview Leadership Academy and University Prep, “will receive support and communication from CSUSB to streamline their application process and set them up for success as they enter the university,” according to Thursday’s board agenda item.
As part of the agreement, VVUHSD will collaborate with CSUSB to host outreach events and promote direct admission, provide CSUSB with transcripts and other data necessary to determine student eligibility, and encourage students to participate in financial aid workshops and college readiness activities.
The program is part of an overarching commitment to college readiness in the district.
VVUHSD students have shown a 17% increase in completing A-G classes from 2023 to now. Additionally, according to data released this fall, students in the Victor Valley district have the highest test scores in English, math and science among local high school districts.
“As they finish high school, students may have up to five pathways they can pursue: the workforce, the military, trade school, community college or a four-year university,” Coles said. “Our commitment to A-G ensures that the fifth pathway — a university education — is open to as many students as possible. This agreement with CSUSB takes that commitment even further by making the pathway to a university easier, faster, and less confusing for students and their families.”
