LeBron James has yet to announce which NBA team he will play for this coming season. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors are thought to be the frontrunners for him, and the Minnesota Timberwolves could have an outside chance of winning the James sweepstakes.
On Tuesday, a post made by the Heat’s social media team had fans really buzzing. The team was seen posting a link to a livestream with the title “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference | July 27, 2026,” which led to speculation that James has secretly already decided to head back to Miami. The Heat later took down that link, but it was captured by a number of social media accounts beforehand.
The franchise, through ESPN, said the posting was a mistake.
“The Miami Heat posted a link to a scheduled live stream titled ‘LeBron James Introductory Press Conference’ followed by the date July 27 to its YouTube channel in what a team spokesperson said was a mistake.
“The spokesperson told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Tuesday that the club’s social media department was preparing for the possibility of James’ signing and mistakenly posted the link to the team’s YouTube page. The post was later deleted.”
As the website Heat Nation pointed out, this was likely a test by the Heat organization so that it can be prepared in the event James does sign with it.
“The sober version arrived through the beat. The video was an error by the team’s social media staff, created as part of preparations for a scenario in which James picks Miami, and it was emphasized that the listing carried no current significance.
“That explanation is less exciting than the conspiracy, but it is also entirely consistent with how professional organizations operate. Teams routinely build out contingency content — graphics, landing pages, broadcast assets — for outcomes that remain unresolved, precisely so they can move within minutes if the outcome lands.
“Miami-based Five Reasons Sports made the same point Tuesday night, noting that marketing and promotional departments prepping for possibilities is standard practice and that the only unusual part was the public leak. Newsrooms do a version of this too; as Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald noted amid the fallout, outlets keep skeleton stories ready for both a James signing and a James rejection.”
Of course, there is a very real possibility that the 41-year-old will choose the Heat, the team he played four seasons with starting in 2010 and led to back-to-back NBA championships. They recently traded for superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they need playmaking and ball-handling help, as well as another big scoring threat. James could fill both needs, at least for a year or two, while also making amends with the franchise and its fans for leaving in 2014.
Team president Pat Riley was left with a bad taste in his mouth when James departed to go back to the Cleveland Cavaliers. But he recently told Dan Le Batard that his relationship with James has “thawed.”
