Coach Riley is very likely to be fired after his team's bowl game

It has been a surprise to many of us that Lincoln Riley has not maintained his elite Oklahoma standard at USC. It is also a surprise to a lot of people in the college football coaching industry that Lincoln’s brother, Garrett Riley, did not succeed at Clemson under Dabo Swinney. He made the playoff last season, but Clemson lost three games and did not have a year that rose to the typical Swinney standard.

After Clemson’s offense sputtered one more time and produced only 10 points against Penn State in a dreary Pinstripe Bowl loss, Garrett Riley’s time at Clemson might be over. It would be a shock if Swinney kept him on staff as offensive coordinator for 2026.

Cade Klubnik

Cade Klubnik never really put the pieces together at Clemson. The quarterback’s failures should be shared by Riley, whose job it was to maximize Klubnik’s talent. There were occasional flashes of that ability, but never the relentless consistency Clemson and Swinney needed.

Clemson’s failures magnified by a weak ACC

Florida State has not been good. Miami was solid but still a two-loss team. The ACC was not uniquely strong this season. Clemson was still mediocre within that context. It’s a searing indictment of Riley and a magnification of his failure under Swinney.

Where was the Garrett Riley we saw at TCU?

Remember, Riley ascended to stardom at TCU, where he guided Max Duggan — the runner-up to Caleb Williams in the 2022 Heisman Trophy vote — to the national championship game in the 2022-2023 season. Riley seemed poised to rise in the profession, but it never happened at Clemson.

Red zone

Clemson had an awful red-zone offense under Riley. He failed to separate himself from his industry peers in that particular context, leading to an unfulfilled tenure at Clemson.

If Garrett Riley does indeed get fired, as expected

Where might Riley land as an offensive coordinator? One intriguing spot is Utah, where the 2025 offensive coordinator, Jason Beck, is expected to go to Michigan to join Kyle Whittingham. If Riley gets fired, he should land a coordinator job somewhere. Utah would be a downward move from Clemson, but not by that much given how much Clemson has struggled in recent years.
