Brock Purdy isn’t moving on from San Francisco 49ers’ recent postseason failures and is instead using it as fuel for the 2026 season. The 49ers quarterback spoke this week about the franchise’s mounting frustration, referencing a string of postseason disappointments that has stretched now into its fourth year. San Francisco lost in the 2022 NFC Championship game to the Philadelphia Eagles, then lost in Super Bowl LVIII to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023, failed to reach the playoffs entirely in 2024, and was bounced in the NFC Divisional round this past January by the Seattle Seahawks — who went on to win the Super Bowl.”How 2023 ended with that taste in our mouth and not being able to finish,” Purdy said of losing the Super Bowl, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “Obviously, we have what it takes to go all the way and win it, that’s when we’re at full strength and good to go. But even though we are at full strength and full health, that’s not guaranteed.”Despite the rough stretch, Purdy was direct about the expectations that remain inside the building. He pushed back on any complacency that a talented roster might breed.”No one just sits there and says, ‘Oh, look at our roster and how beautiful it looks,'” he said. “Guys are ready to go.”The 49ers did show resilience in 2025, staying in NFC West contention through a difficult stretch of injuries before the Divisional round loss to Seattle ended their season abruptly. Purdy missed stretches of games with a lingering toe injury before battling back strong in the end of the season, while other key players like George Kittle, Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and 2025 first-rounder Mykell Williams all sustained season-ending injuries at various points throughout the season.
But another early January exit only adds to the urgency Purdy is carrying into the offseason.”We want to come back and have rings on our fingers and celebrate those key wins and moments with the history of 49ers,” he said. “That’s what’s on our mind, so we got to do it.”For a franchise that has consistently fielded one of the NFC’s better rosters, the gap between contention and a title is becoming harder to explain away. The team will get back those crucial stars they lost in 2025 and added some key members like Mike Evans on offense and Osa Odighizuwa. San Francisco also retained offensive tackle Trent Williams, who threatened to leave earlier this offseason.
The 49ers are in a good spot heading into 2026; they just need to get over the hill for the first time in a long time.
